Why do I feel lost when I'm supposed to be moving forward?

“I finished the thing I'd been working towards. Why don't I feel excited?”

When finishing university it’s normal to feel a bit lost. We have a structure for years, with deadlines upcoming, and structured terms. Now you might have been thrown out into the world unable to find a job you expected you would. Maybe friends have moved away, and you keep getting asked what you’re going to do next and struggling to come up with an answer.

Or maybe you finally left a job that you hated but now miss the routine, or move somewhere that you’ve always dreamed of living but now feel lonely. Maybe you’ve been training for something but now that you’re qualified you feel less certain about yourself.

Change can sometimes be framed as leaving one stage and moving cleanly into the next, but there is almost always an awkward bit in between. This isn’t evidence that you’ve made a mistake or that the thing you achieved is insignificant, it might just be that you’re adjusting to a life whose shape is different from what you expected.

Counselling can be somewhere to talk about that uncertainty without the push to turn it into a five-year plan. It’s normal to be pleased that a stage in your life has ended without knowing what comes next.
