About Me

Hello, I’m Jason Long, a counsellor-in-training based in Wakefield with a background in psychology and mental health support.

I believe that counselling should be a safe and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgement. My approach is person-centred, meaning I work alongside you at your own pace, focusing on what feels most important to you.

I am currently completing my Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and hold a Master’s degree in Psychology. Alongside my counselling training, I work as a Mental Health Support Coordinator with a local mental health charity, where I support people with a wide range of mental health needs. I also serve as a Non-Executive Director at Humans Being CIC, a social enterprise focused on wellbeing and resilience.

Over the years, I’ve undertaken specialist training in areas such as bereavement, addiction, and self-harm, and I run ClearPath, a peer support group for people struggling with hoarding. These experiences have deepened my belief that change happens when we feel truly heard, understood, and supported.

Whether you’re facing anxiety, low mood, grief, or difficulties with daily life, I’m here to walk alongside you as you find your way forward.

My Approach

I work from a person-centred approach, which means I believe you are the expert on your own life. Rather than giving advice or telling you what to do, I provide a safe and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace.

This approach is based on empathy, respect, and genuineness; creating the conditions for you to better understand yourself, build self-acceptance, and discover your own ways forward. In person-centred counselling, the relationship between counsellor and client is at the heart of the process, and it’s through that relationship that growth and change can happen.

FAQs

How long is a counselling session?
Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly at the same time.

Do you offer online counselling?
Yes. I offer both in-person counselling in Leeds or Wakefield, and online sessions via a secure video platform, so you can choose whichever feels most comfortable for you.

How much does counselling cost?
As of July 2026, sessions will cost £40 per 50 minutes. I also offer a limited number of reduced-rate spaces. Please feel free to ask me about availability.

What can I talk about in counselling?
Anything that’s on your mind. People often come to counselling for anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or just feeling “stuck.” Nothing is too big or too small.

How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your goals. Some people find a few sessions helpful, while others prefer longer-term support. We’ll work together to find the right pace for you.

Is counselling confidential?
Yes. What you share with me stays private. The only exceptions are if I believe there is a risk of serious harm to you or others, or if required by law. I’ll always discuss this with you.

What happens in the first session?
The first session is a chance to get to know each other, talk about what brings you to counselling, and see if we’re a good fit. There’s no obligation to continue if it doesn’t feel right.

Do you work with hoarding?
Yes. Alongside one-to-one counselling, I also run peer support groups for people experiencing difficulties with hoarding. This is a safe space to share experiences, gain insights, and build practical and emotional support.
