Can counselling help when my problem is the actual situation?
Some difficulties aren’t just “in your head”. We live in uncertain times, and worries about a difficult relationship, finances, politics, work stress, etc. can’t be solved just by changing your attitude. Good counselling would never pretend otherwise.
A counsellor can’t change another person’s behaviour, find you a new job or make an unfair situation more fair, but it can give you a place to understand how the situation is affecting you without rushing you to “look on the bright side”.
Maybe it will help to notice what you can and can’t influence. Maybe you’ll recognise some needs that you’ve been ignoring or understand why something feels so painful. Perhaps you’ll explore possible choices or find the words for boundaries you want to set. Sometimes the most important part is having your experiences taken seriously.
In counselling, acceptance is sometimes thought of as approving of what’s happened or giving up on things wanting to change, whereas in fact it is more like seeing your situation clearly enough to decide how you want to respond.
If you are living with something that cannot be neatly “fixed”, but would value a space to explore its impact, you are welcome to contact me about counselling.
